Karl A. Breaux
Recipient of the 2010
Franciscan Spirit Award

Karl A. Breaux
Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center bestows the 2010 Franciscan Spirit Award on Karl A. Breaux of Lafayette, Louisiana. This honor reflects Breaux’s zeal in emulating the life and spirit of St. Francis of Assisi through humble service to the community.

For over 50 years, Breaux's Mart has been a community gathering place in upper Lafayette serving the nourishment and household needs of customers. Karl Breaux runs the family business now in the same tradition of personal service his community deserves. This business success is complemented by the Breaux family’s set of values and strong faith.

Karl Breaux is noted for his love for each customer whom he will typically call by name. He has personally bagged and carried groceries for residents to the senior apartments a couple blocks away. He is particularly helpful to the elderly or mentally challenged customers. Breaux was once overheard offering to take care of a purchase balance with a special needs customer who was short on funds.
One admirer relayed, “What impresses me about Karl is his manner of dealing with his customers and associates in a welcoming and appreciative way. He also hires and trains high school aged employees in his academic incentive program on how to put the customer first through humble service.” Breaux’s values and Cajun upbringing show a reverence and love of life around him and he easily spreads joy to those he meets.

Breaux has also been instrumental in building economic success and development in his community. He has served in many capacities that include the Rebuild Lafayette North Committee where he chaired the Infrastructure Division, and served on the C.A.C. Commission addressing infrastructure needs for Lafayette. He serves as Community Advisor for Title 1 Schools in Lafayette and is a Partner in Education for area elementary, middle school and high schools. He is also active on the Crime Prevention Advisory Commission to address community violence. Breaux has done missionary work with the Maryknoll Catholic Order and serves on the advisory board at Cathedral Carmel Catholic School. He is also involved in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and School, and has worked on capital campaigns for Sts. Leo/Seaton library and school.

Breaux has named SOLT Haiti Mission to receive the Franciscan Spirit Award’s annual donation to a non-profit agency of the recipient’s choice. Our Lady of Lourdes applauds Karl Breaux and his humble expression of Mission in our community.
